Ambatomanga Granite: the complete guide

Ambatomanga is a granite in pinkish tones, named after a locality in Madagascar. It is a choice for those who want a hard, durable stone with a warm and unusual colour.

History and origin

Madagascar has a very ancient geological heritage, rich in crystalline rocks that are also used as ornamental stones. Ambatomanga is a niche material, less widespread than Brazilian or Indian granites, and circulates in limited quantities. For this reason availability must be checked each time. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is pink, with a crystalline grain in which pinkish feldspars, lighter quartz and scattered dark minerals can be distinguished. The intensity of the pink can vary from one lot to another. Polishing enhances its colour, while textured finishes lighten it.

Recommended uses

It lends itself to kitchen and bathroom worktops, floors, stairs and exterior cladding. Thanks to its frost resistance it is also suitable for street furniture and headstones. For large surfaces the availability of uniform slabs must be checked first.

Care and maintenance

It is cleaned with neutral detergents and lukewarm water. A stain-proofing protector helps keep its appearance unchanged in areas most exposed to grease. It needs no special care compared with other granites.

Pairings

  • dark woods such as wenge or walnut
  • satin stainless steel
  • anthracite grey for contrast

FAQ

How does it differ from other pink granites?

Grain, colour intensity and the distribution of dark minerals change; direct comparison on photos of the slabs is the best way to choose.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes, like granites in general it resists frost and weathering; for outdoor floors a flamed finish is advisable.

Is it always available?

It is a niche material: the availability of blocks and slabs must be checked at the time of the enquiry.
