Serizzo Scuro Valmasino: the complete guide

Serizzo Scuro Valmasino is a dark grey Alpine stone from Lombardy, commercially classified among the granites. It is valued for its robustness and for the oriented pattern of its minerals, typical of gneisses.

History and origin

Serizzo is a gneiss quarried in the valleys of the province of Sondrio, and Val Masino is one of its key areas. For generations it has been used in Lombard and Alpine architecture for thresholds, stairs, paving, kerbs and cladding. The dark variety stands out for a greater presence of dark mica (biotite), which gives it a more intense tone than classic serizzo. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

On a grey background, light crystals of quartz and feldspar alternate with dark mica flakes, arranged in bands or parallel alignments. The appearance changes depending on whether the slab is cut parallel or across the schistosity, so it is best to choose slabs from the same lot with the same cutting direction. Honing highlights the contrast between the minerals, while flaming and bush-hammering give a lighter, more uniform grey.

Recommended uses

It is ideal for stairs, thresholds, windowsills, outdoor floors, street furniture and kitchen worktops. It withstands frost and heavy wear, so it also lends itself to public and commercial spaces; outdoors textured finishes are preferred.

Care and maintenance

Routine cleaning is done with neutral or slightly alkaline detergents. On kitchen worktops and outdoor surfaces a periodic water- and oil-repellent treatment limits grease absorption and the build-up of dirt in the micro-pores.

Pairings

  • larch and spruce of Alpine houses
  • wrought iron and Corten steel
  • white or pearl grey lime plaster

FAQ

Is serizzo a granite or a gneiss?

Geologically it is a gneiss, that is a metamorphic rock with oriented minerals; in the trade it is placed among the granites because it shares their hardness, durability and uses.

What is the difference between dark and light serizzo?

The dark variety contains more dark mica and has a more intense overall tone; technical performance is similar, so the choice depends mainly on the desired colour effect.

Is it good for outdoor stairs?

Yes, it is one of its most traditional applications. For outdoor steps a flamed or bush-hammered finish is recommended, with edges worked consistently with the tread.
