Rosa Sardo Granite (Ghiandone): the complete guide
Rosa Sardo Granite, known as Ghiandone, is a granite from Sardinia recognisable by its large pink feldspar crystals set in a grey and black matrix. It is chosen for its solidity and for a warm, natural colour, also suitable for exteriors.
History and origin
The name Ghiandone derives from the large feldspar crystals, resembling acorns ('ghiande' in Italian), that characterise the rock. Pink granite is one of the emblematic stones of northern Sardinia, where it has been used for centuries in construction, paving and street furniture. On the market it is widely used for kerbs, paving, cladding and tops. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is pale pink or salmon, with feldspar crystals, some several centimetres across, standing out against the grey quartz and black micas. The distribution of the 'ghiandoni' can vary considerably from one block to another, making every slab a little different. Polishing intensifies the pink, while flaming and bush-hammering lighten it and give a more rustic look.

Recommended uses
Excellent for outdoor paving, squares, kerbs, stairs, walls and façade cladding, even in harsh climates. Indoors it is used for kitchen worktops, bathroom tops and floors with a warm, textured effect. In very formal or minimalist settings the conspicuous grain may feel too dominant.
Care and maintenance
Outdoors it requires very little maintenance: periodic washing with water and, if necessary, a low-pressure washer. On interior tops it is cleaned with a neutral detergent and protected with a stain-proofer. Avoid aggressive de-icing salts on polished surfaces.
Pairings
- light woods such as larch and chestnut
- wrought iron or Corten steel
- white lime plaster and Mediterranean ceramics
FAQ
Why is it called Ghiandone?
Because of the large pink feldspar crystals, resembling acorns, scattered throughout the rock. They are the distinctive feature of Sardinian pink granite.
Is it suitable for outdoor floors and areas with frost?
Yes, it is a compact, frost-resistant granite. For paving, a flamed, bush-hammered or split-face finish is recommended, as it ensures good grip.
Can it be used as a kitchen worktop?
Yes, it resists heat, scratches and acids well. The coarse grain gives the top a very distinctive look, so it is worth seeing the slabs before choosing.
