Deer Isle Granite: complete guide

Deer Isle is a pink-grey granite from Maine, with a medium to coarse grain and a soft tone. It is chosen for outdoor works and interiors with a natural character, delicate colours and great durability.

History and origin

The coast of Maine has a historic tradition of granite quarrying, with stone often shipped by sea to the cities of the American East Coast. Granite from the Deer Isle area belongs to this tradition and is known for its pink-grey tint. It is used for landscaping, cladding, monuments and furnishings. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background mixes pale pink feldspars, grey quartz and dark crystals, with an overall shaded pink-grey effect. The medium to coarse grain gives a lively but not contrasting surface. Polished finishes highlight the individual crystals, while split or bush-hammered finishes give a rustic look that suits the landscape very well.

Recommended uses

Perfect for low walls, solid block steps, kerbs, seating and paving in gardens and public spaces. Indoors it lends itself to floors, cladding and worktops for natural-style kitchens. For worktops, polished or honed finishes are best for easier cleaning.

Care and maintenance

Outdoors it only needs periodic cleaning with moderate-pressure water to remove moss and deposits. Indoors, neutral detergents are used and, on worktops, a stain-proofing protector.

Pairings

  • light gravel and coastal garden plants
  • weathered grey wood or cedar
  • galvanised iron and rope for nautical details

FAQ

Is it suitable for landscaping?

Yes, thanks to its frost resistance and natural tone it is widely used for steps, seating, low walls and garden paving.

What does the split finish look like?

The surface remains irregular and rough, with the crystals in relief: a rustic, non-slip effect typical of outdoor blocks.

Can it be used for a kitchen worktop?

Yes, polished or honed it makes a very hard-wearing worktop; the medium to coarse grain hides crumbs and small marks well.
