Laurentian Green Granite: the complete guide

Laurentian Green Granite is a dark green Canadian stone with a compact, deep appearance. It is chosen for elegant, durable surfaces where a dark but not black colour is needed.

History and origin

The name recalls the Laurentian Mountains, in the Canadian Shield area, formed of some of the oldest crystalline rocks on the planet. Canada has been exporting granites for many decades, mainly for façades, floors and memorials. Laurentian Green is one of the dark green shades of this production. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is dark bottle green, with lighter or blackish crystals distributed evenly. The pattern varies little and allows different slabs to be placed side by side without obvious breaks. Polished, it becomes almost black with green highlights; matt finishes make it more grey-green.

FAQ

Is Laurentian Green more green or more black?

It depends on the finish and the light: polished, it tends towards black with green highlights, while honed or brushed it shows the green component better.

Does it withstand heat in the kitchen?

It withstands moderate heat well, but it is good practice to use trivets for pans straight off the hob, to avoid thermal shock.

Is it also used outdoors?

Yes, for cladding, steps and furnishings; for outdoor floors flamed or bush-hammered finishes are chosen, as they are safer when wet.
