Nuvolato Apuano: complete guide
Nuvolato Apuano is a light grey marble with a soft, cloudy pattern and no sharp veins. It is a practical, versatile material, widely used for floors, stairs and thresholds.
History and origin
It is one of the most widespread varieties of the Apuan district, where grey and white-grey marbles are quarried alongside the more prized ones. The name describes the appearance of the background, with cloud-like patches and shading. Thanks to its balance of looks and cost it is a frequent choice in residential and public building. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background ranges from white-grey to light grey, with darker shading distributed irregularly to create a clouded effect. Variability between slabs is limited, which makes it easier to lay large surfaces. Honed, it looks light and uniform; polished, it better shows the depth of the clouding.

|---|---|

Recommended uses
Excellent for floors, steps, thresholds, window sills and cladding, indoors and also outdoors with honed, sandblasted or bush-hammered finishes. Less suitable as a kitchen worktop, where acids would leave marks.
Care and maintenance
Water and a neutral detergent are all that is needed for cleaning. Outdoors a water-repellent treatment is advisable; indoors, on high-traffic floors, periodic honing restores its appearance.
Pairings
- grey or anthracite aluminium window frames
- larch or natural oak

FAQ
Is it suitable for stairs?
Yes, it is one of its most typical uses: it stands up well to wear and the grey colour hides signs of use. For outdoor stairs, anti-slip finishes such as sandblasting or bush-hammering are recommended.
Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, for thresholds, window sills, steps and paving, preferably with non-polished surfaces. In areas with hard frosts it is advisable to check that thicknesses and installation methods are appropriate.
Is it an inexpensive marble?
Compared with Calacatta and Statuario it is generally more affordable, because it is more widespread. The price nevertheless depends on format, thickness, finish and quantity.
