Atibaia Granite: complete guide

Atibaia granite is a grey Brazilian granite with a granular appearance. It is a practical choice for paving, stairs and tops that require resistance and a neutral colour.

History and origin

The name refers to the Atibaia area in the state of São Paulo. It is a material used mainly in construction, for floors, thresholds, steps and cladding. Like many Brazilian grey granites, it is also well established on the export market. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The grey background is made up of white, grey and black crystals in a medium-coarse grain. The pattern is regular, with possible small variations in tone and crystal size between lots. Polishing increases the contrast between the minerals; flaming evens out and lightens the surface.

Recommended uses

Suitable for indoor and outdoor paving, stairs, thresholds, window sills, kitchen worktops and cladding. It is a good solution for public spaces and apartment buildings thanks to its resistance to traffic. Outdoors, flamed or bush-hammered finishes are preferable.

Care and maintenance

Routine cleaning with water and a neutral detergent. Outdoors, a water repellent limits the absorption of dirt and smog. Avoid strong acids for descaling: use products made for granite.

Pairings

  • grey aluminium window frames
  • iroko or teak for exteriors
  • greenery of flower beds and borders

FAQ

Is Atibaia suitable for an outdoor staircase?

Yes, with a flamed or bush-hammered finish it is slip-resistant and withstands frost well.

How does it differ from other grey granites?

It has a clearly visible medium-coarse grain; the differences from similar granites are subtle, so comparing samples is useful.

Can it be used for kitchen worktops?

Yes, it resists heat, scratches and food acids; a stain-proofing protector helps with cleaning.
