Rosa Aswan Granite: complete guide

Rosa Aswan is the pink-grey granite from the Aswan region of Egypt, recognisable by its large feldspar crystals. It is chosen for its warm tint, its strength and its link with one of the oldest stone traditions in the world.

History and origin

Aswan granite was used by the ancient Egyptians for obelisks, statues and sarcophagi, and is still quarried in the same region. Today Rosa Aswan is one of the most widespread Egyptian granites in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, for floors, stairs and cladding. It is offered in several commercial shades, from the lightest to the most intense. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is pinkish grey with large pink feldspars, grey quartz and scattered black crystals. The medium to coarse grain creates a lively pattern, with variations in tone between blocks that can be marked. Polishing intensifies the pink; flaming gives a lighter, more uniform effect suitable for outdoor use.

Recommended uses

Widely used for floors, stairs, thresholds, window sills and façade cladding. It also works well for kitchen worktops in warm or Mediterranean-style interiors. The variability of its colour suggests choosing material from a single batch for large areas.

Care and maintenance

Maintenance is simple: water and a neutral detergent. For worktops and light-coloured high-traffic surfaces a stain-proofing impregnator is advisable.

Pairings

  • Nero Aswan or other dark granites for floor patterns
  • olive or chestnut wood
  • terracotta-coloured handmade ceramics

FAQ

Is it the same granite as the Egyptian obelisks?

It comes from the same Aswan region, famous since antiquity for its pink granite; the modern quarries are different, but the stone belongs to the same geological context.

Why are there different shades of Rosa Aswan?

The stone varies naturally between quarry beds; commercially, lighter, medium or more intense shades are selected, which are best checked on samples.

Is it suitable for outdoor stairs?

Yes, with a flamed or bush-hammered finish on the treads to ensure grip even in the rain.
