Bianco Nestos: complete guide

Bianco Nestos is a Greek white marble with a pure white tone and a very fine grain. It is chosen for bright, minimalist spaces where a clean white with very little veining is wanted.

History and origin

It takes its name from the valley of the River Nestos in north-eastern Greece, an area rich in dolomitic white marbles. These materials are exported mainly as slabs and tiles for residential and hotel construction. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

An intense white background, sometimes with faint light grey shading and barely perceptible fine crystals. Variability is limited, although small veins or darker spots may appear in some blocks. Polishing gives an almost milky white, honing a velvety, contemporary effect.

Recommended uses

Recommended for floors, cladding, bathrooms, stairs and shelves. Outdoors it is used for paving and cladding in climates that are not too harsh, preferably with a non-polished finish. In the kitchen it must be carefully protected from food acids.

Care and maintenance

Clean with water and neutral detergents, avoiding bleach and limescale removers. A water- and oil-repellent impregnating sealer limits stains without altering the colour. Any dullness can be remedied with professional polishing.

Pairings

  • ash or birch wood
  • chrome or nickel taps
  • indigo blue ceramics and textiles

FAQ

What does dolomitic mean?

It contains dolomite as well as calcite: this makes it a little harder and less sensitive to acids than a pure calcitic marble, but not immune.

Can it be used for a kitchen worktop?

Yes, with a good protective treatment and the habit of wiping up lemon, vinegar and wine immediately; those who want no worries at all should consider a quartzite or a granite.

Polished or honed for a floor?

Polished is brighter but shows scratches and marks; matt honed is more practical in high-traffic areas and bathrooms.
