Bianco Thassos marble: the complete guide
Bianco Thassos is a snow-white Greek marble, almost free of veins, with a sparkling crystalline grain. It is the benchmark for anyone looking for the purest, most uniform white.
History and origin
It comes from the island of Thassos, in the northern Aegean, where marble has been quarried since classical antiquity. It is a dolomitic marble: its composition makes it harder and somewhat less sensitive to acids than calcitic marbles. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request as slabs, tiles and custom work.
Look and veining
A very uniform snow white, with no veins or with rare light grey shades in lower grades. The crystalline grain reflects light, giving surfaces a brilliant, almost sugary look. The Extra grade is the whitest and most uniform.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | Crystalline dolomitic marble |
|---|---|
| Density | about 2,850 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | about 3.5–4 |
| Water absorption | very low |
| Frost resistance | good |
| Acid resistance | medium-low (better than calcitic marbles) |
Recommended uses
Widely used for bright floors and cladding, bathrooms, shower trays, mosaics, pool surrounds, façades and stairs. The white surface reflects light and stays relatively cool in the sun, which is why it is appreciated around swimming pools, with non-slip finishes.
Care and maintenance
Neutral detergents, no strong acids or bleach, which can yellow the joints and mark the surface. A water- and oil-repellent treatment is recommended, especially in kitchens and outdoors. Light-coloured joints should be sealed to keep the white uniform.
Pairings
- With blue and light wood for Mediterranean interiors.
- With warm greys and concrete for a minimal style.
- With coloured mosaics or glass for pools and spas.
FAQ
Is Thassos more durable than Carrara?
Being dolomitic it is a little harder and less sensitive to acids, but it is still a marble: seal it and clean it with neutral products.
Is it good for pool surrounds?
Yes, with non-slip finishes (brushed, sandblasted or bush-hammered) and a water-repellent sealer.
Does it have veins?
Almost none in the Extra grade; commercial grades may have slight grey shades.
Is it available as mosaic?
Yes, it is widely used for mosaics and tiles, also combined with other marbles.
