Imathia Green: the complete guide

Imathia Green is a green stone of Greek origin sold as marble. It is chosen for cladding and furnishings with a strong colour impact.

History and origin

Greece boasts a millennia-old tradition in the use of ornamental stones, and its green stones have been prized since antiquity. The name recalls Imathia, a regional unit of Central Macedonia. Many Greek green stones sold as marble are in fact serpentinites or ophicalcites, which behave differently from calcitic marbles. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is green, with shades ranging from light to dark green, crossed by lighter veins or networks. The pattern is often lively and varies greatly from slab to slab. Polishing enhances the depth of the green and the contrast of the veins; matt finishes make it darker and more discreet.

Recommended uses

Suitable for wall cladding, indoor floors, bathroom vanity tops, fireplaces, tables and decorative details. For kitchen worktops and outdoor use it must be assessed carefully: some green stones are sensitive to acids or can deteriorate with moisture. When laying large formats, adhesives specific to water-sensitive stones are needed.

Care and maintenance

Clean with neutral detergents, avoiding acidic and abrasive products. Protect with an impregnating sealer and wipe up liquids. For installation, rapid-setting or low-water-content adhesives are recommended to avoid warping or staining.

Pairings

  • brass and satin gold
  • walnut or mahogany
  • white or ivory marbles in combination

FAQ

Is Imathia Green a true marble?

Commercially it is classified as marble; like many green stones it may be serpentinitic in nature. For demanding uses it is advisable to check the behaviour of the batch with simple tests.

Can it be used in the kitchen?

It is better suited to decorative surfaces. In the kitchen it calls for care with acids and a protective treatment.

Why is a special adhesive needed?
