Marina Pearl Granite: complete guide

Marina Pearl is a Norwegian larvikite, sold as granite, with a blue-grey background and iridescent reflections. It is chosen for the shimmering effect of its crystals, which change colour with the light.

History and origin

Larvikites come from the Larvik area in southern Norway and have been known for over a century in prestigious architecture and furnishing. Geologically they are monzonites, not granites in the strict sense, but they have similar technical characteristics. Marina Pearl is one of the larvikite varieties on the market, alongside bluer or darker ones. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The blue-grey background is made up of large feldspar crystals that show blue and silver reflections as you change your viewing angle. The intensity of the iridescence varies between slabs and blocks. Polishing is the finish that best enhances the shimmering effect, while honing and brushing greatly diminish it.

Recommended uses

Suitable for kitchen worktops, bathroom tops, wall and façade cladding, thresholds and window sills. It is much appreciated for counters, reception desks and surfaces where the luminous effect is clearly visible.

Care and maintenance

Clean with water and a neutral detergent, avoiding aggressive or abrasive products that could dull the polish. Given its low porosity an impregnating sealer is hardly necessary.

Pairings

  • stainless steel and polished chrome
  • walnut or dark oak
  • white or pearl-grey walls to make the reflections stand out

FAQ

Is Marina Pearl a granite?

Commercially yes, but geologically it is a larvikite, a rock of the monzonite family. In practical use it behaves much like a granite.

What causes the blue reflections?

The internal structure of the feldspar crystals, which scatter light in a shimmering way. The effect is most evident with a polished finish and raking light.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes, it is compact and frost-resistant; outdoors the polish may lose some shine over time, which is why the finish for façades is assessed carefully.

How do I order it?

It is ordered on request: send us the dimensions and finish and we will send you a quote and photos of the slabs, useful for assessing the intensity of the reflections.
