Vytina Black: the complete guide
Vytina Black is a Greek black marble with a dark, compact background. It is chosen for elegant, graphic surfaces, in contrast with light materials or metals.
History and origin
It takes its name from Vytina, in Arcadia, in the heart of the Peloponnese, a mountainous area where dark marbles are quarried. Greece has a millennia-old tradition in the use of marble and today exports materials in various colours, from whites to blacks. Vytina Black is one of the dark offerings of this production. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is black or grey-black, fairly uniform, with possible thin, sparse white veins or small specks. Slabs may differ in the presence of veins and slight grey nuances, to be assessed when choosing the lot. Polishing takes the black to its maximum depth, while matt finishes make it anthracite and softer.

FAQ
Is black marble difficult to maintain?
It shows smears, limescale and scratches more easily than light marbles, especially when polished. With neutral detergents, drying and a good protector it nonetheless stays beautiful for a long time.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
Yes, it is very popular for walls, vanity tops and floors. It is advisable to dry shower areas, because limescale is very noticeable on black.
How does it differ from a black granite?
Black granite is harder and unaffected by acids, so it is better suited to kitchen worktops; Vytina Black, being a marble, offers a softer look but requires more care.
