Levadia Black: the complete guide

Levadia Black is a black marble of Greek origin, with a dark, compact background. It is chosen to create elegant contrasts in bathrooms, floors and interior cladding.

History and origin

It takes its name from Livadeia (Levadia), a town in Boeotia, central Greece. Greece has a millennia-old tradition of marble working and today exports numerous white, grey and dark varieties. Levadia Black is among the black materials offered by the Greek market for interiors. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is black or greyish black, with a fine grain. Thin white veins or small lighter spots may appear, with varying intensity from slab to slab. Polished, it becomes deep and reflective; honed, it takes on a greyer, matt black that hides signs of use better.

Recommended uses

Excellent for indoor floors and cladding, bathroom vanity tops, thresholds and decorative details. Not recommended for heavily used kitchen worktops or exposed exteriors, where acids and weathering dull the surface.

Care and maintenance

Clean with neutral detergents specific to marble, never with limescale removers or acidic products. A stain-proofing treatment helps, but acid marks remain visible on black marbles: wipe up liquids immediately.

FAQ

Is Levadia Black a true marble?

Commercially it is a marble; like many black stones it is a compact, polishable limestone. It therefore has the hardness and sensitivity to acids typical of calcitic marbles.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

Yes, for cladding, vanity tops and floors; in showers a honed finish is preferable, and non-acidic detergents should be used to avoid marks.

Why do dull spots appear on the black?

They are traces of acid attack (limescale, lemon, aggressive products). They can be reduced by professional re-polishing.
