Black and Gold: the complete guide
Black and Gold is a marble with a deep black background crossed by golden and white veins. It is chosen when you want a dramatic material that can give character to a bathroom or an entrance wall.
History and origin
It is an imported marble widely available on the international market, appreciated as a contemporary alternative to the great veined blacks of tradition. It is used mainly in hotels, boutiques and residences where a luxurious effect is sought. Block quality varies and it is advisable to select the slabs one by one. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is deep black, almost uniform. The veins, ranging from gold to ochre yellow and white, form irregular networks that change greatly from one slab to another. Polishing enhances the contrast, while honed and brushed finishes reduce reflections and make the black more graphite-like.

|---|---|

Recommended uses
Ideal for wall cladding, bathrooms, washbasin tops, fireplaces and small furnishings, including bookmatched layouts. It is used as flooring indoors in moderate-traffic areas; not recommended for exteriors or heavily used kitchen worktops.
Care and maintenance
Clean with water and a neutral detergent, avoiding acidic products or limescale removers, which leave dull marks. A periodic stain-proofing treatment protects the polished surface. Scratches are more noticeable on black than on a light marble: it is best to use felt pads and coasters.
Pairings
- brushed brass and gold-finish taps
- American walnut
- white marble for chequerboard floors
FAQ
How does it differ from Nero Portoro?
Both have a black background and golden veins; Portoro is a historic Italian marble with denser, finer veining, while Black and Gold is an imported option, generally more affordable and with a more contrasting pattern.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
Yes, it is one of its best applications: shower walls, vanity tops and cladding. In the shower a honed finish with regular sealing is preferable, avoiding limescale-removing detergents.
Which finish do you recommend?
Polished brings out the gold veins to the full; honed is more practical for floors because it shows fewer signs of wear.
