Arabescato Orobico Rosso: the complete guide
Arabescato Orobico Rosso is a brecciated marble in wine-red tones, with grey, pinkish and white fragments and veins forming an arabesque pattern. It is chosen for highly characterful decorative surfaces, such as walls, fireplaces and furnishings.
History and origin
The name recalls the Orobic Prealps, in Lombardy, an area with a quarrying tradition for coloured marbles and breccias. Brecciated marbles like this are used mainly for cladding, inlays and fine furnishings. Today it is a niche material, appreciated in projects looking for a vivid but non-uniform red. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The wine-red background is interrupted by clasts of various sizes and by grey, white and pink veins that intertwine without a precise direction. The pattern changes greatly between slabs, so selection and layout must be studied carefully. Polished, it reveals intense, deep colours; honed, it looks softer and velvety.

| Classification | brecciated marble (calcitic) |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,700 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 3 |
| Water absorption | low |
| Main use | interiors |
| Acid resistance | low: lemon, vinegar and limescale removers dull it |
Recommended uses
Ideal for wall cladding, fireplaces, bathroom vanity tops, shelves, tables and inlays. It can be used as flooring in residential settings, preferably combined with more neutral marbles. Not recommended for kitchen worktops or exteriors, where it would quickly lose its polish and colour.
Care and maintenance
Clean with water and a neutral soap specific for marble, avoiding limescale removers and acidic products. A stain-proofing impregnator reduces absorption but does not protect against acid etching. If the polish dulls, a stonemason can restore it.
Pairings
- white marbles such as Bianco Carrara for borders and inlays
- polished brass and bronze
- forest green velvets and dark walnut
FAQ
Is it suitable for a floor?
At home yes, especially as an inlay or in rooms with moderate traffic. Being a calcitic marble, in very busy areas it tends to mark and lose its shine.
How do you pair such a colourful marble?
It works well with neutral materials that let its pattern stand out: white or grey marbles, dark woods, warm metals.
Can I use it for a bathroom vanity top?
Yes, with some care: dry any standing water and do not use limescale remover on the top. A stain-proofing treatment is recommended.
