Vermont Verde Antique: complete guide

Vermont Verde Antique is a dark green stone with white veins, sold as marble but serpentinite in nature. It is chosen for its deep colour and for resistance superior to that of calcitic marbles.

History and origin

It comes from Vermont and is one of the best-known greens on the North American market. Geologically it is a serpentinite, a rock different from true marble, although in the trade it is classed among the green marbles. In the United States it has long been used for cladding, tops and window sills. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background ranges from bottle green to almost black green, with networks and veins of white or light green. The pattern is irregular and changes considerably from slab to slab. Polishing enhances the depth of the colour, while honing makes it darker and velvety.

Recommended uses

Recommended for kitchen and bathroom tops, cladding, fireplaces, floors and interior stairs. It is one of the few marble-like stones that stands up well to kitchen use. For exteriors a specific technical assessment of the individual batch is needed.

Care and maintenance

Clean with neutral detergents and dry surfaces after use. A light water-repellent helps keep the colour even. Avoid aggressive and abrasive products, which can mark the polish.

Pairings

  • veined white marble for chequerboard contrasts

FAQ

Is it a true marble?

No, technically it is a serpentinite; in the trade it is called green marble because of its appearance and processing.

Can I use it for a kitchen worktop?

Yes, it is more tolerant of acids than a calcitic marble, although it is still advisable to wipe up lemon and vinegar quickly.

What is the difference from Verde Guatemala or other Indian greens?

They are also green serpentinite stones, but with different tones and patterns: Vermont Verde Antique tends towards a darker, deeper green.
