Breccia Damascata: complete guide
Breccia Damascata is a brecciated marble in red-violet tones, formed from rock fragments cemented together in an irregular pattern. It is chosen for interiors with strong character, where the stone becomes a decorative element.
History and origin
Breccias form when rock fragments are naturally re-cemented by a limestone matrix, and in Italy they have been used for centuries for decoration, altars, inlays and prestigious cladding. Breccia Damascata, whose name recalls damask fabrics, belongs to this tradition of Italian coloured marbles. It is a niche material, often available only in limited quantities. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background ranges from wine red to violet, with fragments of different sizes in lighter and darker tones, joined by a matrix that forms a kind of natural mosaic. Variability is high both between slabs and within the same slab. Polishing enhances the colours and outlines of the clasts; matt finishes make them softer.

FAQ
What is a breccia?
It is a rock made up of angular fragments of other rocks, naturally cemented by a matrix. In brecciated marbles this process creates a mosaic-like pattern, with colours and shapes that change in every slab.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
Yes, for tops, washbasins and cladding it is a very striking choice, provided you use neutral cleaning products and protect it with an impregnating sealer. In showers it is preferable to limit it to the walls.
Why do some slabs have filling?
Breccias may have small voids between the fragments, which are closed with resins during processing. This is normal practice that does not compromise quality and makes the surface more uniform and durable.
How do I order it?
As it is a niche material, it is best to check availability first: send us a request with dimensions and intended use and we will send you photos of the slabs and a quote.
