Rosso Sicilia: complete guide
Rosso Sicilia is a commercial marble in red tones, linked to the tradition of Sicilian coloured limestones. It is chosen to bring warmth and character to floors, inlays and cladding.
History and origin
Sicily has a long tradition of using coloured stones, historically employed in floors, altars and inlaid decoration. The name Rosso Sicilia commercially denotes a red material of Sicilian origin; geologically these materials are often compact, polishable limestones. Shade and availability can vary from one supply to another. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is red, from brick red to pinkish, with lighter veins or patches and sometimes small inclusions. Slabs can differ greatly in colour intensity and density of pattern. Polishing enhances the saturation of the red, while honing makes it warmer and softer.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | compact polishable limestone (commercially marble) |
|---|---|
| Density | approx. 2,650-2,700 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 3 |
| Water absorption | low |
| Main use | interiors |
| Acid resistance | low: dulls on contact with acidic substances |
Recommended uses
Excellent for interior floors, bands and borders, inlays, stairs, cladding and decorative tops. It is not recommended for heavily used kitchen worktops, where acids quickly dull it. Outdoors the colour tends to fade with exposure and the polished surface deteriorates.
Care and maintenance
Use neutral detergents and soft cloths; avoid vinegar, lemon and limescale removers. A stain-proofing impregnator helps protect floors. Dull marks can be treated by re-polishing.
Pairings
- White and black marbles for geometric patterns and chequerboards
- Brass and burnished bronze
- Walnut and cream fabrics
FAQ
Is it a true marble?
It is sold as marble because it takes a polish like a marble, but geologically Sicilian reds are generally compact limestones. Performance and maintenance are similar to those of a calcitic marble.
Can it be combined with other marbles in a floor?
Yes, it is widely used in patterned floors with whites, blacks and yellows, following the inlay tradition.
Does the colour remain stable over time?
Indoors, yes; in direct sunlight and exposed to the weather, reds tend to fade, which is why indoor use is preferable.
