Breccia di Stazzema: complete guide
Breccia di Stazzema is a Tuscan brecciated marble, with violet, reddish and yellow fragments set in a light matrix. It is a stone with a lively pattern, chosen for prestigious interiors and restoration work.
History and origin
It comes from the Stazzema area in Alta Versilia, on the Lucca side of the Apuan Alps, an area known for its coloured breccias. Apuan breccias have been used for centuries in architecture and decoration, particularly for cladding, altars and inlays. Today availability depends on specific batches and must be checked case by case. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
Angular fragments of various sizes in shades of violet, wine red and ochre yellow are distributed across an ivory or pale yellow matrix. The pattern is highly variable and makes every slab different, with denser areas and airier ones. Polishing brings out colours and outlines; honing softens the contrasts.

FAQ
Is it suitable for restoration work?
Yes, Apuan breccias are often requested to integrate historic floors, altars or cladding. In such cases it is best to send photos of the existing material, so that the batch closest in colour and pattern can be identified.
What is the difference from Breccia Damascata?
Both are breccias, but Breccia di Stazzema has a light matrix with multicoloured fragments, whereas Damascata has a more uniform overall red-violet tone.
Is it suitable for a floor?
It can be laid indoors, but it is more appreciated as a decorative element: bands, inserts, rosettes or cladding. For large, busy floors a honed finish and regular maintenance are preferable.
