Calacatta Viola marble: the complete guide

Calacatta Viola combines the white background of Apuan Calacattas with purple and burgundy veins. It is one of the most recognisable and dramatic marbles, loved by designers and architects.

History and origin

It is a marble from the Apuan Alps, where particular geological conditions coloured the veins crossing the white with purplish tones. Long a niche material, in recent years it has become an interior design icon thanks to its colour contrast. Marmi di Carrara offers it among its exclusive materials.

Look and veining

A white or slightly grey background crossed by wide veins in shades ranging from lilac to deep purple and burgundy, sometimes with greenish hues. The pattern is often brecciated, with white fragments enclosed by the coloured veins. No two slabs are alike.

Recommended uses

It is at its best in statement pieces: tables, consoles, washbasins, feature walls, fireplace surrounds, designer bathrooms and lobbies. In kitchens it is spectacular for islands and splashbacks. On floors it is mainly used for inserts, borders or small rooms, so as not to weigh down the space.

Care and maintenance

Gentle cleaning with neutral products; avoid acids and descalers that dull the surface. A stain-proof treatment is recommended on tables and tops. The coloured veins need no special care, but as with all marbles spills should be blotted immediately.

Pairings

  • With brass and warm tones for a contemporary look.
  • With pearl grey and light wood for relaxed interiors.
  • With black furniture and metal for a bold effect.

FAQ

Is the purple colour natural?

Yes, it comes from the minerals in the marble's veins, not from any treatment.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

Yes, for cladding, vanity tops and washbasins, with a water-repellent treatment.

Is it easy to find?

Availability is limited and the pattern varies a lot: it is best to choose the slabs from photos before ordering.

What does it go with?

Warm metals, light woods and neutral walls; avoid other heavily veined marbles in the same room.
