Calacatta Zebrino: complete guide

Calacatta Zebrino is a white Apuan marble with grey veins running in parallel, creating a striped effect. It is chosen for contemporary projects in which the linear pattern of the stone becomes a graphic element.

History and origin

It belongs to the family of Apuan Calacatta marbles, which have a light background with prominent veining. The name zebrino recalls the striped course of the veins, which depends on the structure of the deposit and the direction in which the block is cut. It is valued in interior architecture for walls, bathrooms and furnishings with a modern feel. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The white background is crossed by parallel grey veins of varying thickness, more or less closely spaced. Cutting the block in one direction produces the striped effect, while in other directions the pattern may look more clouded: this should be clarified when choosing. Polishing increases the contrast between stripes and background; honing softens it.

FAQ

Do the stripes always run the same way?

It depends on the cutting direction and the block: slabs may have more or less regular and closely spaced stripes. For continuous walls we recommend planning the layout so that the veins continue from one slab to the next.

Is it suitable for a kitchen?

It can be used for worktops and splashbacks, bearing in mind that, like all calcitic marbles, it is sensitive to acids and scratches. For the splashback it is a particularly successful choice, because the stripes enhance the wall.

Which finish should I choose?

Polished brings out the graphic contrast of the stripes and is recommended for walls and furnishings; honed is more practical for worktops and floors, where it hides signs of use better.
