Cinza Friburgo Granite: complete guide

Cinza Friburgo is a grey Brazilian granite with the classic salt-and-pepper effect. It is a practical, neutral choice for those looking for a resistant stone for interiors and exteriors.

History and origin

The name recalls the Nova Friburgo area in the state of Rio de Janeiro, a region associated with the quarrying of grey granites. It is a widespread material in Brazilian and export construction, used for floors, thresholds, window sills and tops. Its success stems from its neutral colour and good workability. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is light-to-medium grey, dotted with white, grey and black crystals evenly distributed. Slabs are generally fairly consistent, with small differences in tone and occasional clusters of dark minerals. Polished, it appears more contrasted, while flamed or brushed it becomes lighter and more uniform.

Recommended uses

It is suitable for floors, including heavy-traffic ones, stairs, thresholds, window sills, façade cladding and kitchen worktops. It is a good solution for public and commercial spaces thanks to its wear resistance. There are no uses that are really discouraged, apart from choosing non-slip finishes outdoors.

Care and maintenance

Clean with water and a neutral detergent; outdoors, periodic low-pressure washing is sufficient. A water- and oil-repellent treatment reduces grease absorption on kitchen worktops. Avoid very aggressive products based on hydrofluoric acid.

Pairings

  • ash or bleached oak
  • stainless steel and freestanding appliances
  • white plaster and anthracite window frames

FAQ

What is the difference between Cinza Friburgo and other grey granites?

Compared with darker grey granites it has a lighter background and a regular grain; it is still worth comparing the actual slabs, because the shades of Brazilian greys are close to one another.

Is it suitable for outdoor floors?

Yes, it resists frost well. For terraces, pavements and outdoor stairs a flamed or bush-hammered finish is recommended.

Does it need treating?

It is not compulsory, but a water repellent helps prevent oil and dirt marks, especially on rough finishes.
