Donnybrook Sandstone: complete guide
Donnybrook Sandstone is a light Australian sandstone in cream and beige tones. It is valued for its brightness and ease of working, making it suitable for façades and architectural details.
History and origin
It comes from Western Australia, where for a long time it was one of the benchmark materials for public and civic buildings in the region, especially in the Perth area. Its softness during working encouraged its use for decoration, cornices and cladding. Today it is also chosen for restoration and contemporary projects. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is light cream, sometimes almost white, with beige, yellowish or pinkish nuances. The grain is fine and homogeneous, with possible ochre veins and spots due to oxides. Brushed or matt honed, it looks soft and bright; chiselled, it acquires a livelier texture.

Recommended uses
It is suitable for façade and interior cladding, cornices, carved decoration, fireplaces and walls. Not recommended for heavily trafficked floors, kitchens or constantly wet areas.
Care and maintenance
Treat with a water-repellent and stain-proofing protector, especially in areas reached by water and dirt. Clean with water and neutral detergents, avoiding acids and aggressive pressure washers.

Is it a soft stone?
Yes, it is relatively soft: this makes it easy to work, but less suitable for surfaces subject to heavy wear.

How does it differ from a light travertine?
Travertine is calcareous and has cavities; Donnybrook Sandstone has a compact, granular surface without holes and does not contain calcite as its main component.
