Montmoyen Stone: complete guide

Montmoyen Stone is a fine-grained limestone from Burgundy with a light beige tone. It is valued for its understated, uniform appearance, suitable for both floors and cladding.

History and origin

It takes its name from the village of Montmoyen, in the Côte-d'Or, an area of Burgundy rich in building limestones. Burgundy stones have long been exported for paving and cladding thanks to their quality. Montmoyen belongs to this tradition as a limestone with a neutral, versatile colour. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request, as slabs and bespoke formats.

Look and veining

The light beige background shows fine mottling and occasional fossil traces or small darker veins. Variability between slabs is limited but present, as in all natural limestones. Honed, it has a soft, satin look, while an antiqued or brushed finish enhances its texture.

Recommended uses

It lends itself to interior floors, wall cladding, stairs and bathrooms with a classic or minimalist style. Outdoors it can be used for cladding and, after checking the frost resistance of the batch, for paving; in the kitchen, care is needed with acidic stains.

Care and maintenance

For daily cleaning, water and a pH-neutral detergent are all that is needed. A stain-proofing impregnator is recommended in bathrooms and living areas; any marks caused by acids can be removed by professional re-honing.

  • walnut or thermally modified oak
  • brushed brass
  • warm grey or taupe walls

FAQ

Is Montmoyen Stone suitable for the bathroom?

Yes, for floors, cladding and shower trays, provided it is treated with an impregnator and cleaned with neutral products.

How does it differ from a beige marble?

It is a non-metamorphic limestone: it has a more matt, uniform and textured appearance; like marble, however, it is sensitive to acids.

Which formats can be produced?

As well as slabs and tiles in standard formats, steps, thresholds, window sills and special pieces made to drawing can be produced.
