Grand Antique: the complete guide

Grand Antique is a brecciated marble of black and white fragments, with a sharp, theatrical contrast. It is chosen for surfaces that must take centre stage, such as walls, fireplaces and furniture tops.

History and origin

It comes from France, from the Pyrenees area, and is a marble that has been known for centuries in architectural decoration. Its brecciated structure, formed of dark clasts cemented by white calcite, makes it instantly recognisable. It is appreciated both in restoration and in contemporary design, where it evokes a reinterpreted classic taste. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

Angular black and dark grey fragments are set in a white calcite cement, creating a natural mosaic pattern. The size and density of the clasts change greatly between slabs and even within the same slab. Polished accentuates the black-and-white contrast, honed makes it softer and velvety.

Recommended uses

Recommended for cladding, fireplaces, washbasin tops, tables, consoles and patterned interior floors. Avoid it outdoors and in heavily used kitchens; the more fractured slabs are often reinforced with resin and mesh.

Care and maintenance

Neutral detergents and stain-proofing protection are essential, because the white part shows stains and marks. Avoid acids, limescale removers and abrasive sponges. Professional re-polishing restores the original contrast over time.

Pairings

  • veined white marble for frames and edges
  • polished brass or nickel
  • velvets and black lacquered woods

FAQ

Is Grand Antique fragile?

Like many breccias it may have natural micro-fractures: for this reason the slabs are filled with resin and often reinforced with a mesh on the back, becoming stable for their intended use.

Can it be laid as flooring?

Yes, indoors, including in compositions with white or black marbles; in high-traffic areas honed is preferred.

How do you choose the right slab?

Since the pattern varies greatly, we recommend assessing the slabs from photos or in the showroom, indicating the parts to be used for each piece.

How do I order it?

On request: send us dimensions and intended use, we prepare a quote and show you photos of the available slabs for selection.
