Korpilahti Black Granite: complete guide

Korpilahti Black is a black Finnish stone sold as granite. It is chosen for its deep colour and great resistance, ideal for elegant and durable surfaces.

History and origin

It comes from central Finland, a country with a solid stone industry and numerous varieties of dark igneous rock. So-called black granites are often, geologically speaking, basic rocks such as gabbros or diabases. They are traditionally used in memorial work, cladding and furnishing. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is black or very dark anthracite grey, with a fine grain and uniform pattern. Small lighter crystals or glints may appear, varying from slab to slab. Polished, it becomes an intense, mirror-like black; honed or brushed, it takes on a softer matt black.

Recommended uses

Excellent for kitchen and bathroom tops, cladding, thresholds, headstones and monuments. Outdoors it is used for cladding and details, preferably with rough finishes. Polished on floors, it readily shows dust and surface scratches.

Care and maintenance

Clean with a neutral detergent and dry to avoid limescale marks, which are very visible on polished black. Do not use waxes or oily products that alter the uniformity of the colour.

Pairings

  • Polished brass or copper
  • Light oak and white ceramics

FAQ

Why is it called granite if it is a different rock?

In the stone trade all hard, polishable igneous rocks are called granites; many blacks are gabbros or diabases, with similar or superior performance.

Is polished black practical in the kitchen?

It is hard-wearing, but it shows fingerprints and limescale. A honed or brushed finish is easier to maintain.

Can it be used for headstones?

Yes, it is a classic use of Nordic blacks: engravings stand out well against the dark background.
