Preto São Benedito Granite: complete guide
Preto São Benedito is a black Brazilian granite with a sober, compact appearance. It is chosen when a dark, resistant surface that is easy to coordinate is needed, from kitchen worktops to floors.
History and origin
Brazil has for decades been one of the leading producers of dark granites for the international market, and Preto São Benedito is part of that offering. It is sold mainly in slabs for worktops, cladding and street furniture. Like all black granites, it owes its success to the combination of elegance and robustness. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is black, with a fine-to-medium grain in which small lighter crystals can be seen. The pattern is fairly uniform, but the density of the speckling and the shade of black may vary between blocks. Polishing brings out the deep colour, while honed, brushed or flamed finishes make it greyer and matt.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | dark igneous rock (commercial granite) |
|---|---|
| Density | approx. 2,800 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 6-7 |
| Water absorption | very low |
| Main use | interiors and exteriors |
| Acid resistance | high: unaffected by lemon or vinegar |
Recommended uses
It is suitable for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanity tops, floors, stairs and cladding, including exteriors. Outdoors and on steps, a flamed or brushed finish is advisable to improve grip. Polished, on brightly lit surfaces it can show fingerprints and limescale marks.
Care and maintenance
A neutral detergent and a microfibre cloth are enough; on polished black it is best to dry the surface to avoid limescale marks. A periodic water repellent is not essential but helps against oil stains. Avoid abrasive pastes that dull the polish.
Pairings
- matt white doors and satin steel handles
- natural oak or light walnut to balance the black
- brushed brass and warm-light lamps
FAQ
Is Preto São Benedito suitable for a kitchen worktop?
Yes: it is hard, has low absorption and resists food acids and the heat of ordinary pans. Trivets are still recommended for very hot pans.
Polished or matt?
Polished makes the black more intense but shows fingerprints and limescale; honed or brushed is more practical for everyday use and has a more contemporary look.
Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, granite resists frost and weathering. For outdoor floors and steps a non-slip flamed or bush-hammered finish is preferable.
