Guide

Ligourio: complete guide

Ligourio is a Greek beige limestone with a fine grain and a warm, natural appearance. It is valued as an understated alternative to beige marbles for floors and cladding.

History and origin

It takes its name from the town of Ligourio, in the Argolis, in the north-eastern Peloponnese. This area is known for its beige limestones, exported for residential and commercial construction. The material is widely available on the international market as slabs and tiles. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request, including in bespoke formats.

Look and veining

The background is beige with slightly warmer or lighter nuances and, sometimes, small fossil marks or thin veins. Like any natural limestone, it shows variations between slabs, usually limited. It lends itself both to polishing and to matt finishes such as honed, brushed or tumbled.

Recommended uses

It is used for interior floors, wall cladding, bathrooms, stairs and window sills. For kitchen worktops it is not recommended unless you accept the formation of marks; outdoors it is preferable in mild climates and with non-polished finishes.

Care and maintenance

Neutral cleaning products and a stain-proofing impregnator are sufficient. Avoid synthetic waxes, which turn yellow, and abrasive powder detergents.

Pairings

  • sand-coloured glass mosaics
  • brushed oak
  • bronze or burnished metal details

FAQ

What is the difference between Ligourio and Karnezeika?

Both are beige limestones from the Peloponnese; they differ in nuances and pattern, which also vary from batch to batch. Comparing photos of the slabs directly is the best way to choose.

Is it suitable for outdoor floors?

In mild climates yes, with non-slip finishes such as brushed or bush-hammered; in areas with severe frost the technical data sheet of the batch should be checked.

Does it scratch easily?

Being a limestone, it has medium to low hardness and sand under shoes can mark it: doormats at entrances and matt finishes help keep it looking good.

How do I order it?

We supply it on request: just tell us the dimensions and quantities to receive a quotation and photos of the batch.
