Vratza Beige: complete guide

Vratza Beige is a Bulgarian limestone with a light beige colour, compact and fine-grained. It is chosen for its versatility: it is used indoors and, thanks to its good compactness, in many outdoor applications too.

History and origin

It is quarried in the Vratsa area, in north-western Bulgaria, at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. Vratza limestone has long been used in local construction and is now widely exported across Europe for façades, floors and cladding. It is available in several shades and commercial selections. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The light beige background shows small fossil fragments and specks, with a dense, regular pattern. Variability between slabs is moderate, but there may be differences in tone between batches. Honed, it has an elegant, uniform look; sandblasted, bush-hammered or brushed, it is suitable for outdoor areas and walkable surfaces.

Recommended uses

It is used for façades, cladding, indoor and outdoor paving, stairs, window sills and thresholds. In outdoor areas exposed to frost it is advisable to choose rough finishes and check the characteristics of the batch; in the kitchen, care is needed with acids.

Care and maintenance

Outdoors, periodic cleaning with water and a neutral detergent is enough, possibly with a water repellent. Indoors it is protected with a stain-proofing product, avoiding acidic products or concentrated bleach.

Pairings

  • chestnut or larch wood
  • bronze-coloured aluminium window frames
  • Mediterranean plants and grey pebbles

FAQ
