Pavonazzetto is a white marble with purplish veins, famous as one of the most prized coloured marbles of antiquity. Today it is chosen for restoration and for highly refined classic interiors.
History and origin
In antiquity Pavonazzetto, also known as Phrygian marble, was quarried in Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey, and the Romans used it for columns, floors and statues. The ancient material is now available almost exclusively from salvage and is intended mainly for restoration. The name is also used for modern white marbles with dark veins, including Apuan varieties, that echo its appearance. Marmi di Carrara can check its availability on request.
Look and veining
The background is ivory white, crossed by violet, purplish or reddish veins that often form a brecciated network. The intensity and density of the veining vary greatly between slabs. Polishing gives depth to the contrasts, while honing creates a softer effect.
