Arabescato Tombaccio: complete guide
Arabescato Tombaccio is a white marble from the Apuan Alps with grey veining in an arabesque pattern. It is chosen for its classic elegance and the movement of its veins, ideal for bathrooms, floors and prestige cladding.
History and origin
The arabescatos are a family of marbles quarried in the Apuan district, in Tuscany, recognisable by the grey veins that interweave on the white background. They have long been used in interior architecture, furnishings and luxury projects all over the world. Each variety has its own pattern, linked to the quarrying area. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is white, slightly grey in places, crossed by grey veins that form irregular networks and breccias. The pattern changes considerably from slab to slab and is ideal for book-matched compositions. Polishing enhances contrast and brightness; matt honing offers a softer, more contemporary effect.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | calcitic marble (metamorphic rock) |
|---|---|
| Density | approx. 2,700 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 3 |
| Water absorption | low |
| Main use | indoor |
| Acid resistance | low: sensitive to lemon, vinegar and anti-limescale products |
Recommended uses
It is suitable for floors, cladding, bathrooms, vanity tops, stairs, tables and furnishings. In the kitchen it can be used knowingly, because food acids dull the surface; outdoors it loses its polish over time.
Care and maintenance
Clean with water and neutral detergents designed for marble, immediately wiping up acids and coloured liquids. A stain-proofing impregnator reduces absorption, but does not protect against acid etching.
Pairings
- brushed brass
- light oak
- pearl grey and warm white walls
FAQ
How does it differ from Calacatta and Statuario?
Statuario has sparser grey veining and Calacatta warmer tones and thick veins; arabescato has a denser, more interwoven pattern.
Can it be used for a kitchen worktop?
Yes, but it is a calcitic marble: citrus, vinegar and wine can leave dull marks. A honed finish makes these marks less noticeable.
Can the slabs be book-matched?
Yes, consecutive slabs from the same block allow very striking mirror-image compositions.
How do I order it?
