Volakas: complete guide
Volakas is a Greek white marble with grey veins and a bright, crystalline background. It is widely used for floors, bathrooms and cladding, including as an alternative to Italian veined whites.
History and origin
It takes its name from the Volakas area, in the Drama region of Greek Macedonia, an area of major marble production. It is one of the best-known Greek white marbles on the international market and is available in several selections. It is supplied in slabs and tiles for residential and commercial interiors. Look and veining
The background is crystalline white, with grey veins of varying intensity, from fine and soft to bolder. The best selections have a whiter background and more orderly veining, commercial ones more grey. Polishing enhances the brilliance of the crystals; honing makes the surface more uniform.

Recommended uses
Ideal for floors, cladding, bathrooms, stairs, worktops and furnishings. It can be used in the kitchen with the usual precautions for marble; outdoors non-polished finishes are better.
Care and maintenance
Use neutral detergents and soft cloths. A stain-repellent impregnating sealer is recommended on worktops and floors; dullness caused by acids can be removed with professional re-polishing.

Does Volakas resemble Statuario?
Because of its white background and grey veins it is sometimes offered as an alternative to Apuan veined whites, but it has its own grain and pattern. Comparing the slabs is the best way to assess how it will look.
Is it suitable for a kitchen?
It can be used for worktops and splashbacks, bearing in mind that food acids dull it and that it scratches more easily than granite. A honed finish helps to disguise signs of use.
Are there different selections?
