Platanotopos: complete guide
Platanotopos is a Greek white marble with grey veins, with a classic, bright look. It is an interesting alternative for those looking for a veined white for bathrooms, floors and cladding.
History and origin
It takes its name from Platanotopos, a village in Eastern Macedonia in the Mount Pangaion area, which has a long tradition of white marble quarrying. The material is distributed mainly as slabs for construction and furnishing. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
A white background, slightly grey in places, crossed by grey veins of varying intensity, from fine to more marked. The pattern changes from one slab to the next and also allows book-matched compositions with consecutive slabs. Polished, it is glossy and contrasting; honed, softer and more natural.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | medium- to fine-grained marble |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,750 kg/m³ (indicative) |

Recommended uses
Recommended for cladding, floors, bathrooms, vanity tops and interior stairs. The more heavily veined slabs are suitable for striking feature walls. For exteriors and kitchens it is best to consider more resistant alternatives or adequate protection.
Care and maintenance
Clean with neutral marble-specific products, drying water in shower areas. Avoid limescale removers and vinegar-based products. Protect with a stain-repellent impregnating sealer and renew it periodically.
Pairings
- smoked oak
- gunmetal taps
- anthracite grey mosaics or tiles
FAQ
Does Platanotopos resemble the Italian veined whites?
It has a similar effect, with a white background and grey veins, but its pattern and tone are its own: it is useful to compare photos of the slabs before choosing.
Can I create a book-matched wall?
Yes, if consecutive slabs from the same block are chosen; we note this at quotation stage.
Is it suitable for a heavily used bathroom?
Yes, with a honed finish, an impregnating sealer and cleaning with neutral detergents; avoid aggressive limescale removers.
