Classic Roman Travertine: the complete guide
Classic Roman Travertine is the beige travertine of Lazio, a symbol of the architecture of Rome. It is chosen for floors, cladding and façades with timeless appeal.
History and origin
It is quarried in the Tivoli and Guidonia area, near Rome, and has been used since antiquity: the Colosseum and the colonnade of St Peter's are famous examples. In the twentieth century it was also used extensively in modern architecture in Italy and abroad. Marmi di Carrara has handled it in blocks and slabs and supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is light beige, with the characteristic cavities and parallel veins in the vein cut, or a clouded appearance in the cross cut. The cavities can be filled or left open. Finishes range from honed and polished to brushed and tumbled, with very different effects.

Recommended uses
Excellent for floors, stairs, cladding, bathrooms, façades and outdoor paving with slip-resistant finishes. Not recommended as a kitchen worktop, because of its sensitivity to acids.
Care and maintenance
Fill the cavities on horizontal surfaces and apply a water- and oil-repellent protector. Clean with neutral detergents; outdoors, periodic cleaning prevents dirt building up in the cavities.

What is the difference between vein cut and cross cut?
The vein cut shows parallel lines; the cross cut a clouded, more uniform pattern. The final effect changes considerably.

Yes, it has historically been an outdoor material; for floors a brushed, tumbled or bush-hammered finish is advisable.
