Burma Teak Sandstone: the complete guide
Burma Teak Sandstone is a beige Indian sandstone with brown streaks reminiscent of teak wood. It is chosen for cladding and paving with a natural feel and a warm, matt texture.
History and origin
India, and Rajasthan in particular, is one of the world's largest producers of sandstones, used for centuries in local architecture. Sandstones with a wood-like veined pattern, such as Burma Teak, are widespread on the international market for gardens, façades and floors. It is sold in slabs, tiles, setts and split pieces. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is beige or light yellow, crossed by brown, ochre and reddish lines and bands that imitate wood grain. The pattern changes considerably between pieces, with lighter areas and others more streaked. Natural cleft, sandblasted or matt honed finishes enhance its texture; polishing is not typical of this stone.

Recommended uses
Suitable for façade and wall cladding, outdoor paving, pool surrounds, gardens and low walls. Indoors it is used for feature walls and low-wear floors. Not recommended for kitchen worktops because of its porosity and tendency to stain.
Care and maintenance
Apply a breathable water repellent to limit absorption, stains and moss growth outdoors. Clean with water and neutral detergents, avoiding close-range high-pressure washers, which can erode the surface. In damp, shaded areas check periodically for algae growth.
Pairings
- teak or ipe decking
- Mediterranean plants and light gravel
- Corten or anthracite grey window frames
FAQ
Is Burma Teak frost-resistant?
Frost resistance depends on the batch and thickness. For harsh climates it is important to use adequate thicknesses, correct installation and a water-repellent treatment.
Can it be used around a swimming pool?
Yes, with a natural or sandblasted finish it is pleasant to the touch and slip-resistant. It should be protected, because chlorine and water can encourage stains and marks.
How does it differ from wood-effect porcelain stoneware?
Burma Teak is a natural stone: each piece has unique veining and a real texture. It requires more maintenance than porcelain, but ages naturally.
