Eramosa: complete guide
Eramosa is a dolomitic limestone from Ontario, with a grey-brown background crossed by wavy patterns. It is valued because it polishes well and combines the look of a marble with the compactness of a dolostone.
History and origin
It takes its name from the Eramosa geological formation, found in southern Ontario, in Canada. It is a sedimentary stone of marine origin, with wavy laminar structures of organic origin clearly visible in section. It is sold for floors, cladding and tops, often under the name of marble. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background ranges from grey to brown, with lighter and darker wavy veins and bands that create a dynamic pattern. Variability between slabs is high and depends greatly on the cutting direction. Polished, it gains depth and contrast; honed or brushed, it looks warmer and softer.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | dolomitic limestone (dolostone) |
|---|---|
| Density | approx. 2,650-2,800 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 3.5-4 |
| Water absorption | low |
| Main use | floors, cladding, furniture tops |
| Acid resistance | medium to low: more resistant than pure limestones, but should be protected |
Recommended uses
It is suitable for interior floors, cladding, bathrooms, stairs and furniture tops. It can be used as a kitchen worktop if a certain amount of maintenance is accepted; outdoors it is preferable with matt finishes.
Care and maintenance
Neutral detergents and a water- and oil-repellent impregnator are sufficient. On polished tops, wipe up acids and coloured liquids immediately and restore the polish when necessary.
Pairings
- dark walnut
- taupe grey plaster
- matt black taps
FAQ
Is Eramosa a marble or a limestone?
Geologically it is a dolostone, i.e. a magnesium-rich sedimentary rock, not a metamorphic one; commercially it is often called marble because it polishes well.
Can it be used as a kitchen worktop?
It is possible, because dolostone is somewhat more resistant than a calcitic marble, but it should be impregnated and protected from lemon, vinegar and wine.
How is the vein pattern chosen?
The way the block is cut greatly influences the appearance of the bands: we recommend assessing the slabs from photos of the batch before ordering.
How can I order it?
It is ordered on request: tell us the use and dimensions and we will send you a quotation and photos of the slabs, so you can assess the pattern.
Eramosa: available on request
We supply this stone as blocks, slabs, tiles and custom-made pieces. Tell us size, thickness and quantity: we will send photos of the available slabs and a quote within 24 hours.
