Theuma Spotted Schist: the complete guide
Theuma Spotted Schist (Fruchtschiefer) is a metamorphic stone from Saxony, grey-beige and dotted with small dark spots. It is chosen for its original appearance and good durability outdoors.
History and origin
Fruchtschiefer is a contact schist, transformed by the heat of magmatic intrusions that caused small dark nodules to grow in the rock. In the Theuma area, in the Saxon Vogtland, it has been quarried and worked for a long time and is a characteristic material of local architecture, used for windowsills, steps, cladding and paving. It is a niche stone, appreciated by those looking for a European material with a strong identity. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The grey-beige background, sometimes tending towards greenish, is scattered with elongated, grain-shaped dark spots, from which the stone's German name derives. The density and orientation of the spots vary between slabs, giving each surface a character of its own. Honed finishes make the pattern more legible, while cleft or sandblasted ones accentuate the natural effect.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | contact schist (metamorphic rock) |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,700-2,800 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 4-5 |
| Water absorption | low |
| Main use | interiors and exteriors |
| Acid resistance | good |
Recommended uses
It is suitable for windowsills, thresholds, steps, outdoor paving, façade cladding and low walls. Indoors it works well for floors and walls; for kitchen worktops the lot should be assessed and a stain-proofing treatment planned.
Care and maintenance
Maintenance is simple: water and neutral detergents are enough. Outdoors a breathable water repellent limits the growth of moss and dark deposits, especially in shady areas.
Pairings
- white plaster and dark timber window frames
- anthracite painted iron
- plants and light gravel in gardens
FAQ
What are the dark spots?
They are nodules of minerals that grew during contact metamorphism, when the original rock was heated by nearby magmatic masses. They are part of the stone's structure and are not defects.
Is it frost-resistant?
Generally yes, thanks to its compact structure. For highly exposed outdoor applications it is nonetheless advisable to check the technical data sheets of the lot supplied.
Is it similar to slate?
Both are fine-grained metamorphic rocks, but spotted schist is lighter in colour and has the typical dark spots, while slate is generally uniform and splits into thin sheets.
