Atlantic Black Granite: the complete guide

Atlantic Black is a black granite with fine grey speckles, elegant and compact in appearance. It is chosen for durable dark surfaces, in the kitchen as well as outdoors.

History and origin

Under the name 'black granite' the trade often refers to dark rocks such as gabbros, diabases or anorthosites rather than granites in the strict sense. Atlantic Black is an imported material widely available on the international market. Like other blacks, it is widely used in kitchens, furnishings and funerary art. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is black, with small grey specks distributed fairly evenly. The slabs are generally regular, with slight differences in the density of the speckling. Polishing gives a deep, reflective black, while a brushed or satin finish produces a softer graphite effect.

Recommended uses

Excellent for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanity tops, thresholds, windowsills and cladding. It is also suitable for outdoor floors, steps and memorials. On polished indoor floors it tends to show dust and footprints more than light stones.

Care and maintenance

It is barely absorbent and is cleaned with water and a neutral detergent. Avoid waxy detergents that leave smears on polished black. A microfibre cloth helps keep the surface shiny.

FAQ

Is it a true granite?

Commercially yes; petrographically many 'black granites' are basic rocks such as gabbros, which are nonetheless hard and durable.

Does polished black show marks?

It shows fingerprints and limescale more easily; a satin or brushed finish is more practical in everyday use.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes, it resists frost and weathering; for floors a textured finish is advisable.
