Božanov Sandstone: complete guide
Božanov Sandstone is a Czech sandstone with a beige tone and pinkish highlights. It is chosen for its warm, delicate tint, suitable for façades, outdoor paving and architectural elements.
History and origin
It comes from north-eastern Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, an area known for its sandstone formations. It has long been used in construction in the region and neighbouring countries for masonry, cladding and restoration. Today it is also exported for architecture and landscape projects. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is light beige with pinkish nuances, sometimes with yellower areas or rust-coloured halos. The grain is fine to medium, with a homogeneous, only slightly layered appearance. A sandblasted or brushed finish brings out its warmth; a bush-hammered one produces a light, rough surface.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | quartz sandstone (sedimentary rock) |
|---|---|
| Density | approx. 2,000-2,300 kg/m³ (indicative) |

Recommended uses
It is suitable for façade cladding, pedestrian outdoor floors, stairs, walls and garden furniture. Indoors it is used for fireplaces and walls; not recommended for kitchen worktops because of its porosity.
Care and maintenance
Brush and wash with water, possibly with a neutral detergent. On horizontal outdoor surfaces a water-repellent treatment reduces stains, moss and dirt.

FAQ
Is the pink colour always present?
The intensity varies: some blocks are more beige, others more pinkish. For large areas it is best to select slabs from the same batch.
Is it suitable for terraces and pool surrounds?
For terraces yes, with a non-slip finish and protective treatment; for pool surrounds with chlorinated water it should be assessed case by case.
Which formats are available?
Slabs, tiles, steps, blocks and bespoke pieces can be produced from the quarry blocks.
