Bansi Pink Sandstone: the complete guide
Bansi Pink is a pink Indian sandstone from Rajasthan. It is valued for paving and cladding with a warm, natural look.
History and origin
Rajasthan is one of the world's most important areas for sandstone quarrying, and its stones have been used in Indian architecture for centuries. Bansi Pink, named after the Bansi Paharpur area, is one of the best-known pink sandstones of this region. Today it is exported in slabs and paving formats. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is light pink or salmon pink, generally uniform, with possible specks or slight lighter or darker veins. The grain is fine and compact for a sandstone. The most common finishes are natural cleft, honed, sandblasted and brushed.

Recommended uses
It is ideal for outdoor paving, pool surrounds, garden paths, façade cladding and low walls. Indoors it is used for walls and floors in a natural style. It is not well suited to kitchen worktops because of its porosity.
Care and maintenance
A water- and oil-repellent treatment limits stains and mould. Clean with neutral detergents or products specific to porous stones. In shaded outdoor areas periodic cleaning against algae and moss may be necessary.
Pairings
- terracotta and cotto
- teak for outdoor use
- Mediterranean plants and light gravel
FAQ
Is it suitable for pool surrounds?
Yes, with a cleft or sandblasted finish it offers good grip; it should be protected with a water repellent.
Does the pink colour last over time?
Outdoors, exposure may slightly soften the colour; a protective treatment helps preserve it.
Can it be used indoors?
Yes, for floors and cladding, with honed finishes and a stain-proofing treatment.
