Rosso Verona
Guide

Rosso Verona marble: the complete guide

Rosso Verona is the red stone of the Verona tradition, with its characteristic nodular look. Durable and versatile, it has been used for centuries for floors, stairs and architecture, also outdoors.

History and origin

It is quarried in the hills of Valpolicella, near Verona, where red stone has been part of the urban landscape since Roman times. Geologically it is a nodular limestone, sold as marble: it can be found in monuments, portals, pavements and stairs in Verona and the Veneto. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

A reddish-pink background with lighter and darker nodules and fine veins that create a "cloudy" pattern. Tones range from salmon pink to brick red depending on the bed. Honed or brushed it looks warm and antique; polished it gains brilliance.

Care and maintenance

Clean with neutral detergents; avoid acids, including de-icing salts outdoors. A water-repellent protects exterior surfaces from water and dirt; indoors, a stain-proof sealer for the busiest areas. Honing and polishing bring back the vivid colour.

Pairings

  • With Botticino or Bianco Carrara in checkerboard floors.
  • With terracotta and wood for rustic interiors.
  • With wrought iron and light plaster outdoors.
