Calacatta Borghini: the complete guide
Calacatta Borghini is a Carrara marble with a bright white background, crossed by broad, bold grey and golden veins. It is among the most dramatic Calacattas, chosen for bathrooms, statement kitchens and bookmatched walls.
History and origin
Calacatta marbles are prized varieties from the Carrara basin, characterised by a white background and bold veining and quarried in limited quantities. Borghini stands out for particularly thick, contrasting veins, often with warm tones. It is in great demand in high-end international interior design. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is pure white or slightly ivory, with graphic veins ranging from dark grey to gold that can form large patches. Slabs differ greatly from one another, so work is often done by blocks and sequences to obtain bookmatched compositions. Polishing gives depth and contrast; honing a more contemporary, softer effect.

Recommended uses
Suitable for bathroom cladding, washbasins, bookmatched walls, floors and statement kitchen islands. In the kitchen you must accept the patina of use, or choose a honed finish, which hides marks better. Not recommended outdoors.
Care and maintenance
Remove acidic and coloured liquids immediately, use neutral detergents and apply a specific stain-proofer. Honed finishes are easier to maintain than polished ones. The surface can be periodically renewed by a stonemason.
Pairings
- brushed brass and satin gold
- American walnut
- bottle-green ceramics and lacquers
FAQ
Can a kitchen worktop be made in Calacatta Borghini?
Yes, it is a frequent choice in fine kitchens, but marble is sensitive to acids: lemon and vinegar dull the surface. A good treatment and a willingness to accept a patina are needed.
How does it differ from Calacatta Oro?
Both have a white background and warm veins; Borghini is known for broader, bolder veins, while Calacatta Oro usually has a finer pattern. Comparing the actual slabs remains essential.
What is bookmatching?
It is the mirrored placement of two consecutive slabs from the same block, like the pages of a book: with Borghini it creates very dramatic patterns.
How do I order it?
Request photos of the available slabs and blocks and a quote on request; you can also come to Carrara to select them in person.
