Caliza Alba: the complete guide
Caliza Alba is a Spanish limestone in ivory white, bright and clean-looking. It is chosen for elegant floors and cladding with a Mediterranean, contemporary feel.
History and origin
"Caliza" means limestone in Spanish, and Spain is one of Europe's major producers of light limestones. Caliza Alba is appreciated in residential architecture and hotels for its brightness. It is available in slabs, tiles and fabricated pieces for stairs and windowsills. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is ivory white, with slightly warm tones and a very discreet pattern, sometimes with small fossils or faint spots. Differences between slabs are generally limited, but colour nuances from one batch to another are normal. A matt honed finish enhances its natural character; polishing makes the surface brighter but shows signs of use more easily.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | limestone (sedimentary rock) |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,500 kg/m³ (indicative) |

| Water absorption | medium |

Recommended uses
Suitable for indoor floors, wall cladding, bathrooms, stairs and windowsills. Outdoors it is used for cladding and paving in climates that are not too harsh, with slip-resistant finishes. It is not well suited to kitchen worktops because of its sensitivity to acids and stains.
Care and maintenance
Treat with a stain-proofing impregnating sealer after installation and renew it periodically. Use neutral detergents for limestone, never limescale removers or bleach. Wipe up coffee, wine and oil immediately, as they would be very visible on such a light colour.
Pairings
- light oak or ash
- lime-white walls and natural fabrics
- brushed brass and handmade ceramics
FAQ
What is the difference between Caliza Alba and a white marble?
Caliza Alba is a sedimentary limestone: it has a more matt, uniform appearance, without the crystalline veining typical of white marbles. Its porosity is also generally higher.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
Yes, for floors and cladding, protected with an impregnating sealer. Avoid acidic limescale removers and prefer neutral detergents.
Is it suitable for outdoors?
In mild climates yes, with sandblasted or brushed finishes. In areas with frequent frost the resistance of the batch must be checked.
How do I order it?
It is supplied on request: tell us the formats, thicknesses and finish to receive a quote and photos of the available material.
