Pihtipudas Mica Schist: the complete guide
Pihtipudas Mica Schist is a dark grey Finnish stone with silvery highlights due to mica. It is chosen for floors and cladding with a natural character, often in cleft slabs.
History and origin
It comes from the Pihtipudas area in central Finland, a region of very ancient metamorphic rocks. Mica schists split naturally into slabs along their planes of schistosity, a feature long exploited for paving and cladding. In the Nordic countries these stones are also used in landscaping and dry-stone walls. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is dark grey, with mica flakes that sparkle with silvery highlights in grazing light. The natural cleft surface is slightly undulating and each slab shows different shadings. Honed or brushed finishes reduce the relief but retain the brightness of the mica.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | mica schist (foliated metamorphic rock) |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,750 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | variable: quartz ~7, mica 2-3 |
| Water absorption | low |
| Main use | floors and cladding, interiors and exteriors |
| Acid resistance | good: the silicate component resists common acids |
Recommended uses
Suitable for outdoor floors and cladding, footpaths, steps, low walls and landscaping, as well as for indoor walls and floors in a rustic or Nordic style. It is not the ideal choice for kitchen worktops, because of its undulating surface and possible flaking along the schistosity planes.
Care and maintenance
Clean with water and a neutral detergent, brushing cleft surfaces. A water-repellent impregnating sealer limits dirt in the irregularities; avoid high-pressure washers, which can lift the surface flakes.
Pairings
- treated spruce or pine
- glass and steel
- white plaster and light stone
FAQ
How does it differ from slate?
Both split into slabs, but slate is very fine-grained and matt, while mica schist has visible mica crystals that give silvery highlights and a rougher surface.
Is it slip-resistant?
The natural cleft surface is irregular and offers good grip, which is why it is suitable for outdoor footpaths and steps.
Is it frost-resistant?
Generally yes, thanks to its low absorption; for exteriors in cold areas it is best to choose sound slabs without open cleavage planes.
