History and origin

In Mexico, the name cantera refers to the volcanic tuffs used for centuries in architecture, particularly in the colonial buildings of many of the country's cities. Its workability made possible richly carved portals, columns and façades. Today it is also widely used in furnishings and interior decoration. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is red or reddish brown, with a fine grain and small lighter or darker inclusions typical of volcanic rocks. The appearance is matt and textured, with variations in tone from one block to another. It is usually finished matt honed, brushed or carved; it does not take a mirror polish.

Recommended uses

It is suitable for wall cladding, façades, columns, cornices, fireplaces, fountains and sculptures. Outdoors it performs better in mild climates; not recommended for heavily trafficked floors, kitchens or surfaces exposed to severe frost.

Care and maintenance

It should be protected with a water-repellent and stain-proofing product suitable for porous stones, renewed periodically. Clean with water and neutral detergents, avoiding hard brushes that can wear the surface.
