Danby Mariposa: the complete guide
Danby Mariposa is a white marble from Vermont, crossed by soft, wavy grey-green veins. It is chosen as an American alternative to veined white marbles, for bright bathrooms, kitchens and cladding.
History and origin
Danby marble takes its name from the town of Danby, in Vermont, a state with a marble quarrying tradition dating back to the nineteenth century. Vermont marbles have been widely used in the United States for public buildings, memorials and residential interiors. Mariposa is the trade name of one of the veined varieties. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is white, at times slightly grey, with grey-green veins that can be thin and diffuse or form more marked bands. The pattern varies between slabs and also allows bookmatched compositions, to be checked on the lot. A matt honed finish gives a soft, natural look, much appreciated for worktops, while polishing intensifies the contrast of the veins.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | marble |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,700 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 3 |
| Water absorption | low |
| Main use | interiors |
| Acid resistance | low: sensitive to citrus, vinegar, wine and limescale removers |
Recommended uses
It is suitable for bathroom vanity tops, floors, cladding, stairs and kitchen worktops for those who accept marble's typical patina. It is not recommended for exteriors with a polished finish or for those who want a perfectly unalterable worktop.
Care and maintenance
Clean with neutral detergents and remove coffee, wine and citrus immediately. A good-quality stain-proofing impregnating sealer slows absorption, while acid marks and dullness can be reduced by re-honing.
Pairings
- natural oak cabinet doors
- brushed nickel or brass taps
- sage green or pearl grey walls
FAQ
How does it differ from Carrara white marbles?
Both are veined white marbles, but Danby comes from Vermont and this variety has grey-green veining. Carrara offers a wider range of varieties; the choice depends on the colour effect you are after.
Can it be used for a kitchen worktop?
Yes, but like any marble it is sensitive to acids, which leave dull marks. With a honed finish and a good protector, signs of use become less noticeable and form a natural patina.
Polished or honed?
Honed is more practical in kitchens and bathrooms because it hides marks and scratches better; polished is ideal for walls and less heavily used surfaces.
