Inada Granite: the complete guide

Inada Granite is a light grey Japanese granite, among the country's best known for its fineness and uniformity. It is chosen for prestige works, memorials and architecture with an understated feel.

History and origin

It comes from the Inada area, in the city of Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture, a district with a long quarrying tradition. In Japan this granite, called Inada-ishi, is prized for buildings, bridges and above all for funerary monuments. It is considered a high-quality granite and its availability in Europe is limited. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is light grey tending towards white, with small black mica crystals distributed very evenly. The pattern is fine and uniform, with minimal variation between blocks. Polishing gives a bright, clean surface; flamed and bush-hammered finishes lighten it further.

Recommended uses

Suitable for memorials, sculptures, façades, paving, stairs and kitchen worktops. Its fine grain allows crisp engraving and detailed work. Given its cost and availability, it is better suited to prestige projects than to large standard surfaces.

Care and maintenance

Clean with water and a neutral detergent. On kitchen worktops a stain-proofing protector prevents oil marks, which are more visible on light colours. Outdoors it needs only periodic washing.

Pairings

  • hinoki or cedar wood
  • bamboo and rice paper for Japanese-inspired interiors
  • burnished steel and dark stones

FAQ

Why is Inada Granite so highly regarded?

For its fine, uniform grain, light colour and good workability, which make it ideal for memorials and engraving.

Is it suitable for a Japanese-style garden?

Yes, it is a stone in keeping with that tradition and stands up well outdoors, including in pieces such as lanterns or basins.

Does it stain as a kitchen worktop?

Absorption is low, but on a light grey oil and wine are noticeable: a stain-proofing treatment is recommended.
