Lac du Bonnet Granite: complete guide

Lac du Bonnet is a Canadian granite with a pinkish-brown tone, quarried in Manitoba. It is chosen for its warm, earthy tint and its excellent resistance to harsh climates.

History and origin

The granite takes its name from the Lac du Bonnet area, in the Canadian province of Manitoba, which is part of the Canadian Shield, one of the oldest rock formations on the continent. The stone is used in Canada for buildings, monuments and public works. The continental climate in which it forms and is quarried confirms its suitability for outdoor areas exposed to frost. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is pink with brownish tinges, made up of warm feldspars, grey quartz and dark minerals in small grains. The pattern is fairly uniform, with variations in tone between pinkish and brown from one block to another. Polished, it takes on a coppery tint, while flamed it looks lighter and matt.

Recommended uses

Recommended for exterior cladding, paving, steps and monuments, even in cold locations. Indoors it lends itself to kitchen worktops, thresholds, window sills and floors. Its warm tone goes well with rustic interiors and timber houses.

Care and maintenance

It needs little maintenance: neutral detergent and water for everyday use. In harsh climates avoid very aggressive de-icing salts on polished surfaces, which can become dull.

Pairings

  • western red cedar or spruce
  • copper and bronze
  • dark grey stones for paving contrasts

FAQ

Does it withstand frost and de-icing salts?

It withstands frost very well; salts generally do not damage granite, but they can reduce the shine of polished finishes, so rough finishes are preferable outdoors.

What is its tone compared with red granites?

It is less vivid than a red granite: the colour ranges between pink and brown, with a more earthy effect.

Can it be used for kitchen worktops?

Yes, it is a worktop resistant to scratches, heat and acids; a stain-proofing impregnator completes the protection.
