Petrified Wood: the complete guide

Petrified Wood in slabs is made of sections of fossil tree trunks, in which the wood has been replaced by silica over millions of years. It is chosen for its unique appearance, halfway between wood and stone, and for the remarkable hardness of the fragments.

Suitable for: BathroomWall cladding

History and origin

Petrified wood forms when trunks buried by sediment are slowly mineralised by silica-rich waters, which preserve their rings and grain. It is found in various parts of the world and is prized both as a collector's material and for interiors. In slab form the sections are arranged side by side and bonded with resin. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The sections show concentric rings, radial cracks and bark in brown, ochre, reddish and grey tones. The combination of cuts makes every slab unique, with sometimes marked colour variations. Polishing brings out the grain and gives an almost glassy effect; some thin sections let a little light through.

FAQ

Is it wood or stone?

It is stone in every respect: the structure of the wood has remained, but the material has been replaced by silica. This is why its hardness is close to that of quartz.

Is it suitable for a dining table?

Yes, it is one of its most successful applications. Just avoid placing hot pans directly on it, to protect the resin.

Can it be backlit?

Generally no: most sections are opaque. Only some lighter parts let light through to a limited extent.

How do I order Petrified Wood?

On request, with a quote based on dimensions and use and photos of the slabs, because every piece has a different pattern.
